Focus on the WHY

When setting goals, one of the most important questions you can ask yourself is: Why? Why do you want to achieve this goal? Why are you starting this journey?

Understanding your why gives your goal a purpose—it turns a vague intention into something personal and powerful. Without it, goals can feel hollow and become easy to abandon when things get tough.

  • Let’s say your goal is to get stronger. That’s great—but why do you want to get stronger? Is it to become a better hockey player? If so, that gives your training a purpose beyond just lifting weights. It gives you something real to connect with on the days you don’t feel like showing up.

  • Maybe your goal is to be healthier. Ask yourself: Why is health important to me? Is it so you can live a longer life and be there for your kids—or even watch your grandkids grow up? That’s a why that will carry you through hard days, setbacks, and plateaus.

  • Sometimes we have to dig a little deeper to uncover our true motivation. But once we discover it, that why becomes our anchor. When things get hard—and they will—it reminds us of what we’re really working for. And that makes all the difference.

  • So today, take a moment to reflect.

  • What is your WHY?
